STEP 1
Building and Safety
Call your local building and safety and ask them if you are allowed to build your dream ADU. This is a free service offered by your local building and safety.

STEP 2
DESIGNER
Get in contact with a Designer and start drawing plans for the ADU. A good designer will take care of the entire process for the homeowner. It's the designer's job to deal with the city for any back-and-forth requirements and corrections. Contact Natalie if you need someone to help with ADU plans.

STEP 4
Review Bids for Framing, Plumbing, Electrical
The most expensive and difficult sections of building an ADU are rough Framing, Plumbing, and Electrical. Consider hiring a Subcontractor with ADU experience. By working with a contractor with ADU experience the homeowner will eliminate a horror scenario.

HOW TO VERIFY A CONTRACTORS LICENSE
Bids should include the contractor's license in their initial estimate. Visit The Department of Consumer Affairs Contractors State License Board to verify the current status of the contractor license.
CONTRACTOR WITH ADU EXPERIANCE
We highly recommend working with subcontractors with ADU experience. This one critical step will eliminate headaches for the homeowner, especially if building an ADU as an owner-builder. Licensed subcontractors are bonded therefore if anything happens to workers on the job site, the contractor's bond is liable, not the homeowner.
